BOHEMIA, NEW YORK – August 13, 2007 --
Often associated with the late fall and winter seasons, the common cold is no less nasty or common during the summer - when changes in both weather and surroundings strain the body’s immune system, according to Mark Moyad, MD, University of Michigan Medical Center’s Director of Complementary and Preventive Medicine.
"Helping your immune system is a year-round job that can reap year-round benefits," says Dr. Moyad. "All too frequently people assume that the germs associated with colds are prevalent only during the winter season. The fact is that when you combine summer travel that often includes car trips, plane flights and hotel stays, with less healthy eating patterns, you’ve got a great recipe for catching a cold."

To stay well, Dr. Moyad encourages people to use the following tips year-round:
• Wash hands frequently.
The majority of cold viruses are transmitted hand-to-hand or skin-to-skin. Avoid rubbing your eyes or nose, and encourage children – especially those in contact with other children – to keep their hands out of their mouths. Most important everyone should wash their hands thoroughly several times a day, especially before meals.
• Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamins C and E.
Foods containing these vitamins help support the immune system. Foods rich in vitamin E include sunflower and corn oil, sunflower seeds and nuts such as almonds and peanuts. Vitamin C-rich foods include orange juice, citrus fruits, broccoli and green peppers. Also important is to reduce intake of concentrated sugar (e.g., soda, candy) as excessive sugar impairs the immune response system.
• Get a good night’s sleep.
Lack of sleep can profoundly inhibit the body’s immune system. Getting a full night’s sleep (usually around eight hours) can do wonders in keeping an individual’s natural defenses at optimum efficiency. This is especially relevant to teenagers.
• Stay hydrated.
Increasing water intake will help you stay healthy. When feeling under the weather, drinking extra fluids helps to prevent dehydration caused by fever, loosens mucus, keeps the throat moist and lessens the chance of coming down with a cold.
• Supplement vitamin intake with Ester-C® vitamin C.
Ester-C is a unique dietary supplement that contains naturally occurring vitamin C metabolites, is absorbed quickly by the body and delivers 24-hour immune protection.* Taken all year-round, Ester-C offers powerful, highly advanced support to your immune system.*
• Exercise regularly.
only can regular exercise lower stress, but research also indicates it can stimulate the immune system and promote healthy sleep.
• Listen to your body.
If you do come down with a cold, take it easy. Expending excessive energy robs valuable resources from your immune system. Even attempting to perform normal work or social activities can be too much. Besides, when coming down with a cold, the best thing to do for people you care about is to rest and avoid exposing them unnecessarily.

“The goal is to build your immune system to help prevent a cold. But if you catch a cold, the tried and true remedies are effective: stay at home, rest, eat healthy foods and drink plenty of fluid,” says Dr. Moyad. “I would add to this list of suggestions that you supplement your diet with a quality vitamin C product like Ester-C to bolster your immune system and keep you healthy all year-round.”
